Sedalia Heritage Foundation Statement of Purpose

Statement of Purpose                                                                         

To serve as the managing tenant in partnership with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources Division of State Parks as specified in a concessionaire agreement;

• to function as a full-service trail head to the Katy Trail;

• to function as Sedalia's Welcome Center;

• to interpret and celebrate heritage through exhibits, events, programs, and activities;

• to offer heritage themed gifts and souvenirs and locally handcrafted items;

• to showcase the Sedalia Katy Depot as a local landmark through a website, social media, guided and self-guided tours, advertising and publications;

• to serve as a catalyst to engage interest in and support of, historic preservation and heritage interpretation.

Overview of Objectives

     A    Maintain a strong and effective organizational structure

1     Attract and retain quality staff and volunteers
2     Provide for consistent and long range financial management to
       assure adequate financial resources to implement the heritage          center operations; and to assure creditability through financial          reporting
3     Assure progressive and well balanced programs through a                strategic planning process
4     Increase recognition of Foundation and its purpose

  
     B    Provide direction for the Katy Depot Historic Site and Heritage Exhibits

1     Serve as the managing tenant to support day to day operation          of the facility and provide for the health and safety of patrons          and security of the facility
2     Protect and preserve the historic integrity of the Sedalia Katy            Depot Historic Site

3      Interpret the Sedalia Katy Depot Historic Site

4      Offer an introduction to the area’s heritage sites

5      Interpret social history as influenced by the railroad

6      Preserve artifact collections according to museum standards

7      Offer educational programs

8      Sponsor activities and host special events

9      Offer retail merchandise which enhances the interpretive  
        experience

10     Market the depot as a visitor destination

11     Develop standing and rotating exhibits uner the direction of an          interpretive and exhibit design plan

12     Organize informal learning opportunities through events and            activities to encourage public interest in Missouri Agriculture,            Whiteman AFB, Ragtime, Rawhide, Public Art, and soilded  dove heritage stories.

13     Assure designation of the Sedalia Heritage Trail and enhance            user experience and enhance user experience of the Katy Trail

Blue Ribbon Vision Statement           

The museum’s heritage galleries are recognized as an asset and receive wide support from the Department of Natural Resources Division of State Parks, the local community and grant sources.

A full time person is employed to coordinate operation of the store, events, exhibits and facility.

A volunteer core serves as trained docents to support the day-to-day operation of special event activities and for guided group tours.

Sufficient funding resources have been identified for the establishment of a Foundation Fund to perpetuate Long Term Katy Depot Development Goals.

Activities of the Sedalia Heritage Foundation support aggressive program development.

The heritage galleries follow standards of excellence in museum management.

A professional exhibit design plan process directs interpretation, collection management and site enhancements.

Those visiting the Sedalia Katy Depot Historic Site will understand

1)        and appreciate the Sedalia area’s railroad heritage

2)        how the railroad helped to advance a rural society

3)        the traditions and transitions which reflect how the railroads              created a new way of life

4)        all aspects of modern life have a railroad component

5)        working for the railroad was a way of life

Various programs offered by the Sedalia Heritage Foundation will interpret:

*          evolution of the railroads

*          history of the Sedalia Katy Depot

*          what is was like to work for the railroad

Heritage interpretation is experienced at various locations within the city. 

Programs encourage participation.

Special programing targets the youth and is supported by the school systems.

On-line exhibits are offered to compliment the storylines.

A time capsule awaits opening in the year 2102.

Monitoring methods have provided feedback to develop widely supported activities.

The Sedalia Katy Depot Historic Site has a strong identity as a result of an ongoing comprehensive marketing campaign.

Advertisements and response pieces are incorporated into promotional efforts working in conjunction with local and state alliances.

A web page provides a state of the art introduction to the site with links to a tour of the community; a tour of the site; an overview of the interpretive themes; a calendar of events; a merchandise line and interactive exhibits.

            1       Governance Strategies

                        A    To maintain a strong and effective organizational structure

1)    The Board of Directors sets direction through policy statements, assigns human resources, assures implementation of action plans, and assures adequate financial resources.

a.    The Board is comprised of a minimum of six
individuals each serving as a respective liaison.

b.    The Buildings & Grounds Liaison supports maintenance and site development.

c.     The Financial Liaison oversees budget preparation and financial reporting and makes recommendations for distrbution of financial resources.

d.    The Event Liaison supports decision making in establishment of annual event schedule.

e.    The Merchandise Liaison supports direction setting for buying, consignment, production of custom items, and inventory control.

f.       The Marketing Liaison supports decision making in development of marketing messages and promotional activities.

g.    The Program Liaison recommendations on Heritage Interpretation policy, procedures and interpretive philosophy.

 2)   The Friends of the Depot provide opportunities for individuals to support the rehabilitation of the Depot and operation of the Heritage Exhibit through financial contributions or railroad memorabilia.

3)    The Sedalia Area Tourism Coalition  serves under the umbrella of the Sedalia CVB as a coalition of heritage related entities to help prepare the community for a comprehensive community development approch to heritage tourism, serve as an advocate for related developments, support activities of other heritage organizations and to support activities which link the community to the depot.  A SHF Representative serves as liaison to this group.

                        A    To attract and retain quality volunteer staff

                              1)    To develop job descriptions for each position to facilitate       the volunteer identification process

                              3)    To instill a sense of ownership and stewardship through       formal orientation and training programs
