Friends of the Depot
Friends of the Historic Katy Depot sponsor special events, heritage exhibits, and educational programming to ensure the historic integrity of the Katy Depot landmark is preserved.
Since reopening in 2001, nearly 150,000 people have visited the Sedalia Katy Depot to enjoy guided and self-guided tours, national art shows, art exhibits, guest presentations, character enactors, traveling and temporary exhibits, bike shows, trail rides, special occasions, concerts, car shows, and much more. Through your continued support, we look forward to expanding these programs and offering exciting new programming designed to enhance visits to the Katy Depot and ensure the legacy continues for generations to come.
Over $750,000 was raised locally to partner in the restoration of the Katy Depot and to install the Railroad Heritage Exhibits. Since the completion of that phase, Friends have generously donated $7,000 in contributions and countless
man-hours to support Depot events. Over 150 individuals have contributed 693 artifacts valuing more that $33,000, a collection that includes an extensive list of Railway Apprenticeship booklets, photos, time tables, tools, and dining car china.
Friends efforts now turn to raising an estimated $30,000 in support of the next phase of development.
The Foundation is dependent upon grants, sponsors, user fees, memberships, and retail sales to cover an annual $150,000 budget. Funds received from our Friends support the following special projects:
First Friday Presentations - $5,000
Six professional storytellers interpret historic personalities. The events are free and open to the public and include light refreshments.
Kids Club - $5,000
Guided school tours, Kids Activity Room, Toy Train Days and the popular Polar Express which are all offered free of charge to approximately 500 kids each year.
Sedalia Ragtime Heritage Curriculum Guide - $1,200
Production of a teaching unit to introduce and reinforce the concept that American music is unique and had its origin in Classic Ragtime, specifically The Maple Leaf Rag by Scott Joplin, published by John Stark and Son in Sedalia. This is intended to supplement the study of American and Music History in the 4th grade public school curriculum. Hard copies of the guide will be distributed within the central Missouri region, and also made available on-line.
John Stark Publishing Company Historic Site Commemorative Plaque - $2,150
Placement of a sidewalk-embedded plaque in front of 114 E. 5th, Sedalia, Missouri as a memorial to the Scott Joplin and John Stark signing of the “Maple Leaf Rag” contract on August 10, 1899 and commemorating the place where American Music history was made.
